Just thought it may be interesting for you to see how java.sun.com site looked like in the old days of java, even when there was no such technology announced. I was surfing the net while I got into this page from Martin Hardee :-) It's amazing when you compare the first (March '95) and last (Dec '03) screenshots. Lots of changes but I'm not sure they couldn't get into this point little sooner!

Not always you can keep the full simplicity while you already have great amount of stuffs to expose. All in all I agree with you, it's not solid enough to reach into what you want in one-two-three steps!
